What if it's better without the headphones? It seems to be yeah.
Inviting a bunch of strangers.
Get more president again.
Oh yeah, I definitely don't want to listen to this.
She's the sacrifices we make.
Right, I didn't shave today. I just don't forget about it.
Well, interesting thing about these Chrome books by the way, and that's you know this. The district is going to be handing these out.
When I use the kids count.
They can't access the Redlands.
Toolkit website where they get everything.
From the Google account blocks it.
Some totally annoyed by the whole thing so.
So you it was sort of easier when they were logged in as a.
Guest on the device, but then they couldn't save any websites or documents.
So actually create an account rather than doing it in the University account, and we've got some old dummy account that I'm trying to log in and make sure it all works, but so when such a pain.
Yeah, these like kids and family accounts are more trouble than they're worth.
Uh will say just saying here.
Then there were already in what's what's, what's going on?
I would not another place.
We're up to 29, although three or four of those are test accounts from admissions, but it's 29 logged in order, signed up anyway.
Well, if you go back to the tab like the the session where you hit control to access the.
Presentation you can see a list of all the people registered below that.
And then once they login, they'll show up as having attended the event and and some of those names might.
So there's a decent amount of.
Folks who are music apps. Although when I tried to build a query to send you who has.
Admitted, I couldn't do that, so I apologize.
We can help with some of that in terms of the Analytics.
Were you able to find the the registration page?
Yeah, I was just looking through the names I was trying to export a quick query off of that page in the new query, but it wouldn't pull in.
Any of the music application or music decision step?
Oh Oh yeah, no there there all, um, Hey Terrance.
Uhm yeah, the way that we can easily add that, but the way that theories are built for registration, and this is true for all events. It just has the name of the person. But we can easily Add all those fields in an an.
And then you can pull the query and it will have more than just their name and the question because the query is only designed right now to pull in what they typed into the registration page.
But that's something that we can easily add, so that way you can see.
Who applied who's been admit, like who who's doing and then?
Once the event is done, it will automatically like you were saying it will automatically.
Like Register people so will know who showed up and who didn't.
I can send you all those analytics as well.
Maybe once Terence gets back, this is his first time in the slate web and are so maybe once he gets back you all can maybe go through what the order will be in terms of you know who who's talking first.
It's a, It's an easy answer.
Joes show I'm just here for support.
I'm going to let him talk about I'm going to talk about study away.
Log in early and see if everything worked and it worked really smooth. I just.
Terrance, just something to know. The students in CS. They can hear us, but we can't see or hear them.
So all they can do their only way of communicating with passes through the chat feature.
Yeah, so that should something when we get to maybe a Q and a portion. Uhm, and we are students have already sent us some questions but just know when we get to that.
There is a slight pause you gotta give him a second to like type there question in and I'll read the questions out loud that way.
It doesn't get too confusing with all four of us trying to read questions that students are posing, but otherwise other than welcome. Welcome welcoming everyone. I will be silent as well until it's QA portion and I'll just read, read out loud and maybe.
Maybe start with the ones that I emailed you all.
I think some of those will probably answer in the presentation. I don't know if you had a chance to look at that or not. Insofar Brad.
Yeah, they're sort of the usual.
Questions, uhm, so we're totally prepared for those, and, uh, nice to see how pretty even mix of music applicants and.
Non applicants who are willing to participate, so that's good.
Yeah, we sent what we've done with these is specifically for people who've been admitted and who replied. They got a special invite.
But the information is on the website and so forth, so it is.
We've made sure the people who are interested know about it, but we've also opened it up to just people who who admit who want to tune in. We figure there's there's no harm, especially with something like music as we know a lot of students might be interested in being involved, but not necessarily majors, but just want to learn about the Department so.
What do you think? Do you like the blind or the tree?
Alright will will green space here.
I'm gonna go get some water real quick. Guys are right back.
Terrence, what are you eating?
I just got a little bit of orange juice and a Tamale.
Is that lunch or just a snack?
And there's the four o'clock snack. Is my family come back.
He's a growing boy. Come on.
Yeah, I'm back home in England.
No, I'm home in Oakland, Uhm?
Unfortunately, doesn't give me the most kind of office spaces Brad was talking about his background. I was like what's going?
Mine is my kitchen table.
That's that's what that's let's going on here. It's that's what's in the background, but I can I. I was trying to make sure I'm facing a wall that way people can't see the like all the other things that are going.
Hell yeah, got most most of it hidden.
No one can see what's happening behind me or in front of me.
Yeah, your fourth out. Well, you probably have these everywhere, but to have the.
The banner was a good idea I.
Yeah no, we we missions. I have a car full love everything banners, tablecloths, all kind of random stuff. So that came in handy.
I figured I should put something behind me, I don't know.
So people know I'm legit, especially with Webex meetings where you're inviting people to like your personal room so creepy it was like, feel like I need to have something so students know that like this is official business that's happening.
When I go put on a red line shirt as well I I have a couple easily disposable. I might disposal it.
If you want you have 7 minutes before it goes live. So if you have a shirt somewhere in your room, it's up to you buddy.
Brad, are you teaching any classes this semester?
I am but you know, when it came to.
You know when my son recording class was at the point where.
We were doing a lot of studio assignments and recording settings in most of the.
Content was already taught.
And so it was really disappointing that they didn't get to have that segment, but there was no way to teach it online.
So I basically just gave them.
Reading assignments and videos to watch and comment on which is a real let down for them too, I'm sure, but.
Anyways, it was. It was it good reinforcement but.
Yeah, obviously a bummer way to end.
Parents, how are your online classes going?
Do you have online classes?
Hum, unfortunately is Brad was explaining and I feel it went for a lot of my classes.
Online wasn't very good for a lot of classes, uhm, but most of my schedule was rehearsals too.
Hum and those we just flat out said no.
Hum can't do those online, so there was.
You know 810 hours of my school work.
Just kind of clipped off, um, but.
And at, um, gun really familiar with online?
Platforms like women are Webex and the ones that are still going are we're making do and there there.
Way better than nothing, um.
Advanced choral conducting this morning and we were also at the point in the class or we were gonna get to applying the things we had learned.
Hum, we kind of had to pause that which is a little unfortunate, but.
You just adapted, and it's it's nice to still have one or two things and keep learning.
Certainly not why it's affected. My senior year to go.
Well, you guys do we have a plan I think.
I'll just jump in and kind of take the lead and work through the the power points and then Terrance.
I'm gonna talk about study away a little bit and since you.
Studied away, uhm, you know, maybe get some experience about that.
You have to talk about, you know Adam and maybe one or two other profs that you really.
Light and you know that would be cool.
Our speakers and everything up and then will just kind of, you know, take it as it comes up.
A lot of the questions, probably parents, will you'll be able to jump in on and Brad too.
What kind of work through the slides? I really don't think it'll take too long, maybe 15 minutes or so to get through the slides and then look like a.
You know the questions that come in.
So I'm gonna talk about studying away and then a couple of professors basically consent.
Yeah, and whatever else you want to jump in with this.
Yeah, any word from Christine was she able to or?
She just got back to me so I so yeah, I will just will keep it at the for more than that and the video start getting weird like for as you can see if it fits kind of perfectly across the way when you start adding more than four then it gets kind of wonky with audio and visual. And then you start having faces everywhere which is kind of. This is easier to focus on.
Is the foreign in the slides?
And Joseph, do you have control of the slides?
OK, perfect just wanted to make sure someone.
I just click on the next one right if I wanted to.
Yeah, so yeah, so you're the one who can move him around. We we can't.
Know that Terrance, just in case.
Things happen, but should you need to either mute yourself or cutoff your video at the top next towards its broadcasting. You can see the little Mike in a little video, so I just want to make sure I always try to point that out to people in case all hell breaks loose.
Don't know if you have like dogs or cats or I don't know.
An online classes you know someone's even moving their laptop. Everyone just like.
We can't hear anyone anymore.
And so yes, it reminded me of that.
Just know that that's there. Hopefully none of us have to use it. But yeah, things happen.
Do you have no control over?
Like my sister making a smoothie like starts moving.
Conference call, you have to wait until I'm until I'm done. Then you can have breakfast.
Julie Townsend said, I hear my call and her son jumped in and put his foot in the camera.
Could have been a lot worse.
I heard there's some district that is sent something out to parents or students are like. Please tell your dad's to like wear pants and like shirts because they keep doing the the you know all my classes and parents are just, you know walking through the background and there's a lot of dads in particular who who don't wear pants or shirts and.
Yeah, but I was like that must be a real issue if a district have to send out like a district by email, that's like.
Please tell your parents are worn them when you're on a webinar, so that way when they're just walking through, they know that like you know, there's video happening. Give him a heads up.
Oh, look at that, Terrence. You made it even more official.
Well, cold, and my dad isn't working.
Alright, so it looks like we'll get started in like 10 seconds.
So you want we won't have to do anything, it'll just go right.
Yeah, yeah don't don't wait for a sound or anything.
We'll see the guests count jump though.
Looks like we have quite a few guests tuning in. We'll maybe wait just one or two more minutes. Um, since the event just now went live. So again, if you're joining us now, welcome will. Wait just one or two more minutes to give everyone time to click on the link and join us here with the session, and then we'll get started.
For those of you who are joining us students feel free to type in the chat where you're joining us from.

Here a little bit more about the University of Redlands School Music. My name is Doctor Jodika. I am the director of the school music and along with me today we have Brad Andrews, who is our admissions director for the School of Music in Flint Perrier. Who is a performance major and graduating this year, so we're glad to again. Have you here with us and we just want to tell you a little bit about the school music schedule. Said if you have questions as we go along.
Please type in the chat and will take print plenty of questions at the end so just a few slides to go through here. First of all, you're making a tough decision right now and you're weighing your options between a lot of different schools. You're getting offers from a lot of different schools your everybody is telling you how wonderful they are and you're trying to figure out where my gonna go. What's my next step, and you know, I think we're talking about the University today.
Wherever you need to place in a lot of Ways. And also I, I just want to highlight a few areas in which were a little bit different and a little special and maybe help you make a choice.
First of all, our class sizes are very small. We really pride ourselves on keeping our class is small so that you can get that really individualized attention so that you can get to know your professors and know the college really well, and so that you can really get that individual attention that you deserve from the private institution. You won't have a classes taught by a graduate assistant. All of our copier taught by professors so Adventist professors.
And so you won't have a graduate student. It's gonna be teaching a class at level and we're proud of that one.
Our greatest distance to also be learners without the responsibility of having to take on a class on their own. So we're happy about that. We're proud of that.
You probably know, but we have the Redlands promise which is a promise that you will receive all of the classes required for your degree program in four years. And if you if for some reason that that doesn't happen and it's on us, it's our fault class wasn't offered or had to be cancelled for whatever reason. Then we pay for you to come back to finish your course work without any additional cost to you. And that's the promise that we make to you.
One with that we have a very wonderful music education program. For those of you that might be music educators someday and we have a pathway so that you can complete The Bachelorette. Musically music, education and the California teaching credential within the four years. It is very possible to do that and most of our students do complete that pathway and that does include the student teaching.
What's the master will follow my opinion, yeah.
Yes, well we do have a fantastic satellite campus in Salsberg. Uhm, I went to study away with the program called IES in Vienna which is also in Austria.
So instead of doing for years of a bachelors degree or more and then going on to a credential program, you get it all in one package and after four years you can actually get out there, get a job, start earning money and doing what you love to do. So we're very proud of that too. We've got some great performance opportunities for all of our ensembles in our students from a large ensembles SM ensembles, extra ensembles or opera workshop. They're going to million opportunities throughout the school year. We do about 220.
Performances that includes recitals, large ensembles, guest ensembles, faculty recitals and those kinds of things. So there's a lot of performance opportunity for you.
And the reason I just decided to study well, way with that different program rather than go to our satellite campuses while Salsberg also was a great musical history. Mozart coming from there I just wanted to be in Vienna. It's a larger city in Fallsburg and there's the Vienna Philharmonic and that was a very large draw for me to go there and experience a lot of those opportunities.
I think studying away uhm.
Get a wonderful study away program and part of our experiences that University of Redlands actually has a home in solving that we own is our Salsberg campus and we have a wonderful study away program there. The director of this work program is actually a music faculty member, and so there's a chamber music program that she has instituted which is really 2nd to none an our students perform in Salsberg. They go to Vienna, they travel all over Europe in that program and it's it's really a fantastic program.
Parents is with us today and Terrance.
Did study away for a semester right? SMS returns.
Yeah, just a little bit about your experience.
No, if you guys have been kind of hearing a lot about all all the adulting classes, all those fads going on, um, well, I'd say studying away is is the best way to learn adulting because you kind of go get to travel somewhere else in the world.
Um, usually by yourself. You know your parents aren't coming along with you when you study way an and figure a lot of things out on your own. When I went to Vienna, I had to learn a new language. I met new people because I wasn't with the Redlands program, so I was meeting other people for the first time and I was meeting a new place for the first time I had to figure out how to get around, how to cook for myself, but I live in an apartment with others and there's a lot of new which was challenging at first, but resulted in a lot of growth.
Coming out of that and figuring out how to maneuver a new city and a new language and a new way of life that afterwards.
Reading about all adulting classes, I can already done that.
Often the Stars We Bachelor of music program. If you're considering The Bachelor of music degree program is very rigorous program, but we still encourage our students to study away for a semester if they can, and it's very possible our competition program is designed so that in the fall of the junior year are composition students can go study away and we make it a priority and we will not discourage you from studying the way we think. It's part of the part of the experience. And of course with a global pandemic that's going on right now and.
It's very difficult to travel, of course. Um, so we're we're hopeful that you know we can get through this and get back to our study away program in full swing in the fall. And we're hopeful that everything will workout OK.
We have some very unique programs at the University. I talked a little bit about our music education program and how unique It is with our relationship with the school of Education, but we're also offering some other specialized programs at the Masters degree level. Now are vocal chamber music program which is led by Christopher Gabi toss, a former member of the King singers and Chris will be onsite next year and he'll actually be.
Eating some of our undergraduate courses as well. We're very excited about that. To bring that in.
Are something some of our professors are professors are extremely talented, but not only wonderful teachers, but they're fantastic performers and just really great. And they give so much time and so much energy to our students. In frequently though, if a student has a 45 minute lesson, will go ahead and give an hour just because a camp and.
The study with with Adam Wolf is our principle horn player with the relevant Symphony and talk a little bit about Adam and the things we've gotten from him and maybe a couple of the full time professors too.
Yeah, I wanted to really emphasize how exciting it is to study with professors we're actively doing what you want to be doing. That's really special.
Sayjal Waddy
04:11:22 PM
Hi All- make sure you click "full screen" to better see the slides
That having my teacher Adam Wolf, you know when I walk in and at the start of our time together when we talked about, our goal is how I could say, Hey, so I really want to be a studio musician or freelance musician. I really want to play, you know, in an opera pit and and be able to talk to someone like Adam who also is a freelance musician in the LA area and then to throughout throughout the year throughout lessons to be able to kind of build that into your curriculum it makes.
Learning a little more personal and you don't just have.
No, play this this way because it's I think you should start to develop your tone in this manner because I know your professional goals and I think this is Gonna this this step you're taking is gonna help you get you there. I think that that's really personal touch and I'm really motivating touched a private lessons there with Adam there and a couple other teachers outside of that dynamically.

The one course I'm taking right now is is advanced choral conducting with Doctor Andrews. In addition, two conducting our Chapel singers, one of our choirs on campus is also a teacher, and I've had it for ear training and now it burns, called conducting and really brings in a large background of experience into the classroom and facilitating kind of discussions with experiences and being a teacher here experiences that we can connect you, whether it be.
Bringing aspects of choirs. Students are in in class to that class makes learning a little easier because.
We're learning about things that are new by relating them to things that aren't. I think we've done, and teachers of one with us.
So those are just some of the reasons why we might say why, why red life? Another reason is there are ensembles. We have many ensembles choose from and some of the questions that came in ahead of time, where about are ensembles and can non majors participate in ensembles? And the answer is yes, non majors can participate in any of our ensembles. And here's a list of them. We have two concert bands that wind ensemble and symphonic band. We also have our studio jazz band or University orchestra or opera workshop program.
And then three choirs. University Choir Chapel fingers in Bel Canto. In addition to that, we have chamber ensembles at every level there strings. Woodwinds, brass, percussion, jazz improvisation, and two guitar ensembles, and we also have some student directed ensembles that are more acapella. Groups 8 hole punch in Redlands, rhapsody's and there's a new essay TV 1 two and I can never remember that Brad came over the name of that group.
No, if I remember I'll come back to that.
Word of mouth. That's right, that's right. Thank you so. So we do have some student LED ensembles that do fun, vocal, jazz, and acapella repertoire to all of our ensembles are merit based. So if you are a first year student and you come in and you outplay a graduate student, you'll get first chair. If you are a first year student an you out sing another graduate student, you're going to be in Chapel Singers. An that's just how it goes. It's all merit based. Same thing with opera workshop.
It is very frequent that are undergraduates get roles in the opera productions. That happens a lot, so you know, whereas other larger institutions, most of the time it's graduate students that get the legals or their plane first chair. In those kinds of things, and so our ensemble directors take the best player and they put him in the right spot. So everything is a meritocracy with our ensembles.
Here's a few pictures of Art.
Of our ensembles are a percussion ensemble is fantastic, the top right is a picture of our opera production that was la boheme. Bottom right is one of our collaborative pianists and on the bottom is a special gala performance with some solo singers with our orchestra and chorus is.
And our ensembles outside. Sure this these are some pictures of our most recent tour to the Bay Area with Chapel singers in Bel Canto an. We stayed at our new marine campus at the San Francisco Theological Seminary and we stayed there and did a concert in the Chapel with Stuart Chapel there with the picture up on the top right and then on the bottom right is a view of the outside of the Chapel. We also sang for a service at Grace Cathedral, which is, uh.
The top left and then the bottom. We had some fun times on it to Pier 39 acquires have also gone to Canada. The Chapel fingers has been selected to perform at Coral Canada, which is a really prestigious event and they were actually the only American choir to be chosen for that. We've performed at other conferences like the American Choral Directors Association, Tasmac and others. Both are bands and choirs have done that.
We have a 73 year tradition of the feast of lights at the University and the feast of lights includes our orchestra acquires on percussion ensemble, Flute, Flute Ensemble, Brass Ensemble. There's all kinds of things and it really brings together the whole School of Music in a wonderful celebration of the Christmas story, and it includes all of that, with actors and acting as a tableau scene. And it's a really wonderful tradition we do.
Or performances, and we sell you sell out every year. It's a great time.
We're also really fortunate to be able to welcome some guest artist to campus each year, just as some examples we've had the King singers to campus twice like the picture there on the screen. That was our choirs singing along with the King singers we've had Chanticleer. We have The Canadian Brass coming in December. The real Groupon Voches 8 have both been here. the Chicago brass performs a few years ago and our most recent one was Peter Dubois, organist from Third Presbyterian Church in Rochester.
And from the eastern school music and Peter has an international performance career and that was quite an event. So we do this a lot and we like our students not only get the experience of watching the world class artists perform, but we also make sure that there's an interactive experience, and so they all have an opportunity to not only perform with them, but also interact with them personally. One on one, many of time and through workshops and other sort of interactive experiences. So we make sure that there's definitely an educational component as well, instead of just bringing some guest artists.
It says that some other pictures here on the right. That's the real group up on the top left is Butch is 8 working with Chapel singers and on the bottom is Peter blah.
We also have another special performance opportunities through the Redlands Symphony Orchestra that Concerto competition presidents on a recital and master classes with guest artists that we have a very unique relationship with the Redlands Symphony there are Local Regional Symphony and most of the principles are teachers in the School of Music and our student that we have an opportunity to audition for the Symphony twice per year to be approved to play in one of their.
Concerts and so our students get real professional experience sitting alongside their teacher and getting that really amazing professional experience. It's a very unique opportunity for our kids. The Concerto Competition is also in conjunction with the Rs. Oh and we run this competition. It's a very rigorous competition where we're going outside judges and the winner is a featured soloist with the Relevant Symphony Orchestra in a professional environment that runner up then also performs with the University Symphony Orchestra.
The presidents on a recital is sponsored by the president counsels office, and we choose eight performers to perform for this special event, and it's a really high auditors or eight of our top performers that are chosen for that, and we try to spread that across all studios throughout the year. We have master classes with guest artists 2 but euphonium and clarinet and bassoon. We had a question ensemble. We had a new work.
And on some great works, new music ensemble that actually played the compositions of our composition majors and we really make it a point to bring in these guest artists who are students can have their education reinforced by people that are in the field. And they're giving really good practical advice about how to market themselves and create PR materials and write a resume. And then they actually get their music performed many times by by these folks. So it's worked really hard to bring in a lot of.
In addition to that, because of our proximity to Los Angeles and those kinds of things, we have some special events that we are sometimes hired to do, and these are just a sampling. The choirs have performed the Josh Groban several times. We've we've done Pete Townsend's Classic Quadrophenia, which was a total blast that was at the Greek Theatre. And then they also performed with Sarah Brightman. In her show when she was touring all over the world, heard her recent world.
Boy, I'm so these kind of opportunities are very unique, trusted and swear. They get that really that real world professional experience you show up. You get a 30 minute rehearsal and then you're on stage with a world class artists. It's it's pretty awesome. So we get to do that quite a lot because of our proximity to Los Angelus Chapel. Singers has also been featured on an episode of Glee, so we've got a lot of fun things to do too, but by students.
So I'd like to open it up to questions and.
Say it again one. Take a few now.
Tara Ragsdale-Cronin
04:21:09 PM
By chance, is there a harp ensemble? Or would the harp only be used in the Redlands Symphony Orchestra
All right, uhm, thank you for that overview. And yes, everyone who's tuning in. Feel free to type your questions in the chat and we'll do our best to get through all of 'em before the session began. We did have some students email less questions. I think some have probably been offered in some of the questions I've probably been answered through the overview that was given, but there are a few.
That are a little bit different, so I'll start with maybe those three and then we will continue with answering any questions that you type into the chat. So one of the questions that was sent in ahead of time was from a student who wanted to know if there are new opportunities for creating ensembles.

is the process for auditioning for music ensembles different for non-majors?
Duhita Gondhalekar
04:22:05 PM
Can you rent instruments on campus? I am a tuba player, so I would like to know if i have to purchase one before I come in the fall.
And they were particularly interested in if we had a mariachi band, and if so, with that be something that someone could create if there was interest.
Sure, we have students come come to us with ideas all the time. Our most recent is a group of eight people and they put together an ensemble and they're learning early music there. Specializing in early music we had last year I had some students come to me with an interest in forming an early music ensemble, incorporating harpsichord and.

I saw that music majors do not have to pay extra fees for lessons. Does this apply to minors as well?
Continue and some singers. We have students they put together a trumpet ensemble and actually the that ensemble was chosen to perform at the National Trumpet Association Conference, which unfortunately was cancelled. But but we have those kinds of things that that get formed. Students do fun projects on the side and they'll get together and do things. I think a mariachi ensemble would be a really exciting thing to include. We don't currently have it, but I think that would be a really exciting.
Thing to include in our in our curriculum is possible for sure. I would be very supportive of that. We actually have a student now who wants to start a handbell ensemble, so he took it upon himself to approach the president and University advancement and start a fund raising campaign to raise $25,000 to purchase handles. And he's about halfway there.
And so it's pretty amazing, yeah, we support those innovative endeavors for sure.
Awesome, and then there's one other question that was emailed. I think we want to address before we get into some of the questions that have been put in the chat just because I think I can imagine other people thinking this. This particular student wrote in that although my main focus is music they were interested in, maybe double majoring or minoring in a field outside of music, and so I wanted to know what that looks like. I know Terrance, you are in fact doing that. This particular student was interested in French, and so was.
Joshua Grothem
04:24:01 PM
What is the cost for lessons if you are not a major or minor?
Was trying to figure out how they might combine that and so maybe if you walk could could talk through what that looks like and then after that we'll get into. We have quite a few questions in the chat and so then we'll start maybe making our way through some of those questions.
Sure thing, yeah, it's absolutely possible to double major.
I'm glad you wanted to jump in on that one.
Yeah, so this can happen a number of ways, uhm?
So any of our music majors can have a minor that'll fit in. Whether you're a Bachelor of Arts or any of our Bachelor music program majors. If you're a Bachelor of Arts student, you can double major with any other BA or BS in four years. If you're a Bachelor of music student, we have many students wear Bachelor music in music, education and performance that's possible. You can be performance and another BA or BS, but we also have a five year degree.
Program where you can earn two diplomas with a Bachelor of music and any second major. We've also had some questions about or engineering program, and while that is a 3 two for all majors, including our Bachelor of Arts with our Bachelor of music, it is.
Intended to be afford to program.
And even though I say that the only student who has done it did it in a 3 two, so, uh, uh, another excellent example of you know that over Achiever and so we need to talk about what credits you bring in through um AP.
For example, to see what that timeline looks like and talk about study abroad, but yes, minor or a second major is absolutely possible at Redlands, and we will provide you an advisor in both fields of study to help you navigate that timeline so that it fits in your designated.
Terrence, maybe, do you wanna add a little bit to that since you are currently pursuing multiple?
Sharon Sabino Galicia
04:26:11 PM
How long does the process to switch into the music program take once a student enrolls in the university?
Well, I'm afraid I'm, I'm not pursuing multiple majors.
Evan Raymond
04:26:26 PM
Is there a limit to how many ensembles you can participate in?
So I had one mention that no worries, but it's something that I had considered an well. My decision not to was ultimately because I decided I wanted to go more performance tracked, but my decision not to never any step of the way did I doubt that it wouldn't be possible at the University, I heavily encouraged and even not deciding to double major Ida heavy interest outside of Music in not just outside of music in mathematics and physics, and combining the two.
A more the three, and even though I don't have a double major in math and music or physics and music, I've been able to take classes in both I've been able to take sound physics, and I've been able to Brad with us right here, is in charge of the audio Department on campus, and I've been able to take sound recording classes with Brad and apply kind of map.
And talk to faculty. And really, Brad is one example, but all other faculty of always encouraged me in in those entries, and that's something I've been thankful for.
Awesome, so it looks like we have a lot of questions about ensembles so we have one student. I'll read off a few of them because we might be able to answer a couple of questions in one go. So one wants to know specifically if there's a harp ensemble. We have someone else who would like to know more about what the processes for audition Leanne Ensemble. If you're not a major someone wants know if there is a beginning level jazz.
Uhm, and then one other about ensembles wanting to know if there's a limit on how many ensembles you can participate in.
Sure, so uhm, I find that last one there.
We're in multiple ensembles. Whether it be allowed in the chamber ensemble.
Hadley Barber
04:28:16 PM
How do you balance the commitment to ensembles with other academic pursuits?
Many of them performing in multiple large ensembles, so we have a, uh.
OK, you got it. Depends on your GPA and your class standing and then we try to hear a first year student. We we really only wanted in one large ensemble, but you're great. Did you consider more than one? So a lot of our instrumentalists also using acquire encourage that.
1 by so so, so most of our students do more than one ensemble. Answer that.
Let's see that the hard question. Yeah, so the heart studios is one that we would like to build. We don't have a harp on sambol for saying, but our harvests do.
Chamber music and so there in ensembles outside. Are you just playing another Chamberlain combos? We did have the International Harp Conference here a couple years ago. Mary drop into the hub and spoke there and she's really great so.
Uh, let's see what else with that process for auditioning.
Yeah, so we could audition for the first week of classes in the fall semester and.
There's different requirements for each of our ensembles weather, instrumental for vocalist and you sign up for a five or 10 minute timer. You go in and do the other thing and then your place on the appropriate ensemble for the singers. We ask you to sing a prepared piece as it's light reading and then some tonal memory for the instrumentalists. Normally they play a solo extra bright Terrance.
You too I depend someone's on his last birthing some studios. Well, um, that usually play a solo piece, black spirits, and then maybe usually some sight reading. And specifically answer here in your question that audition process is the same for majors and non majors, yeah?
And then someone wants know about sorry.
Yeah, I just want to jump in and say that you know whether you're an instrumentalist or vocalist, especially if you're a music major. Doesn't restrict your ability to participate in other ensembles, so there are.
Ryan Wilson
04:31:13 PM
I read that minors in specific music areas can't be achieved by music majors. While working towards a music degree for the 3-2 program, would it be possible to have a concentration or minor in jazz studies?
A large number of instrumentalists in our fires and, you know, participating in multiple groups may mean crossing over a man. That's a great experience to put your musicianship into practice being an instrumentalist and acquire or joining a jazz group and sort of branching out so you're not limited necessarily by your instrument. You need to be sufficient at reading that instrument, but.
Uhm, you instrumentalists can participate in choir or vice versa.
Speaking of instruments, someone wants to know about the rental process. This particular student is a tuba player, and so they're wanting to know specifically about that, but I think that's maybe a great question just to talk about.
What that rental process might look like, depending on maybe the instrument you play and whether you have one, or whether I know many students are used to playing. If they're part of a group through their high school, their use of renting through their high school, and So what it looked like when they transition to our program.
Yeah, for sure we have a large memory.
That we loan there's no cost for that. We loan them to our feelings and we also have a.
In agreement with the music store in town that helps us out with those with acquiring those instruments will have a very large inventory that we want to experience. And just as an example, for a two person you have a graduate student to the player and he didn't needed in Cuba for his recital. We didn't known one, and so we bought 1 and now we own an F2 book, which is pretty cool. And now that we are doing distance learning, have allowed the students to take those.
Long instruments Homewood answer to continue to practice and and keep up the shops. So yeah we do that and it's a fairly easy process.
Awesome and then we have Java wanted to know what's the cost for lessons. If you are a major I think someone else also but also asked about lessons and costs. So what's that look like? If you are a music major and then maybe what's the difference if you're if you're not involved with music with costs?
Ryan Wilson
04:33:31 PM
Being a percussionist, having access to specific instruments can be a challenge. Do percussion students have access to instruments when ensembles and classes aren't happening, for example on a weekend?
If you're a music major, there's no posture lessons. We waive those fees. There's there's no extra cost for that. If you want to take a secondary instrument, there's a small fee for a secondary instrument. So as an example of your flute player, and you want to take private piano lessons, there might be a small fee for that. $75 for the small strip, which equates to about $3 a lesson.
Hum and some of our students do that. If you're in a non music major. If you're in one of our ensembles and taking lessons, then I wait those keys so there's no peace.
As long as you participating in.
We have a question on how to balance the commitment. Uhm, so, um. Hadley wants to know, um?
How soon's balance their commitments to ensembles with maybe other academic pursuits. So you know, music majors are busy.
How does that work in terms of balancing all the different commitments that you might have with ensembles and practices and private lessons in classes and Whatnot?
Yeah, it's it's difficult.
Yeah, parents would even put this one. You got the closest experience for this.
Yeah, nothing stands of having done it for four years now and someone else earlier had asked if there's a limit on the amount of ensembles you can be in.
I don't know if there's an official limit in place, but it reaches the point where you kind of there is a point where there there's more than you can manage. Uh, an it's it's difficult balancing that.
For example, you know my experiences. I'm regularly in. I'm a horn player, French horn player, and I'm usually in orchestra and Wind Ensemble. My large ensembles, an chamber ensemble are too like crashing ensemble and then a brass quintet.
Talking about managing that.
But in the short answer is it's hard but doable. Um, write something you learn and it's something I really think. Well, it kind of frankly thankful you learn is not a time managed because of that in college.
Thankfully, you know orchestra and wind ensemble on those are separated. By separated I mean orchestra. We were Hurst one day and Wind Ensemble the next. I don't have two large ensemble rehearsals. I'm in a day so those orchestra. Alot of these ensembles are kind of anticipated that a lot of students are going to be in more than one, so we're kind of scheduled that way and they're kind of scheduled to help you manage in being more than one.
Having time outside of those ensembles see there is time there is time for homework, time to practice and when you go to time management is also time to have fun too.
And these ensembles are scheduled in.
Time slots that are not the busiest across campus, so you will have slots in the same time that some of the athletics will practice, or when some of the labs will meet, but it's specifically set in a time that you're not going to have a lot of conflicts, so it is a one year commitment when you.
A sign in sign up. Register for an ensemble.
Being in four ensembles is something only music majors should really do, uhm, but the person who created word of mouth and sings in Chapel singers is not a music student, is not a music major, and so it's absolutely doable. It really depends on what else you're interested in, what clubs you might want to participate in.
But one or two groups is right for most people, and it's absolutely possible to fit that into your schedule. You know music students should be spending a couple or more hours in the practice room everyday. Part of that is their own somewhere, but it's something you've got to build in, and that's professional training as well, because that's what they're going to experience in the real world. So this is something that is doable. We've got a large number of non majors in our ensembles in every group, and they keep coming back because it's a lot of fun. It's a great community.
Yeah, I want to reiterate that it's really it's. It's really worth it to all those chances to make music.
Awesome, I uhm. I guess Ryan is wanting to know specifically about uhm.
Terrence Perrier
04:38:16 PM
Hi Caitlin, did see your question! Our studio big band is our only large jazz ensemble and our jazz improv ensemble is our small jazz ensemble. Unfortunately, neither of them are what I would call "a beginner" level. If you wanted to start a beginner jazz ensemble that's something that would have to be started (and something as a french horn player I would be curious to join you on!)
About maybe common combining 3 two with a concentration in music or a minor and jazz. So I guess just wanting to be a little bit more clarification about how the multiple major or concentration would work. Ryan, if I've misunderstood your question, feel free to.
Re type it in and then he's also wanted to specifically know, I guess, more information about the types of percussion instruments that exists.
Yes, and wanting to know if as a progression is does he still have access to instruments when classes aren't meaning or on the weekends, or kind of how access works.
Yeah, so are we have dedicated sorry go ahead.
I was gonna say we have dedicated rooms for specific instruments like percussion and only percussionists are granted keys and access to those areas so you will have access. You'll be needing to coordinate with your.
Sayjal Waddy
04:39:17 PM
Any other questions?
Fashion students to create a schedule, but you will have access to the percussion practice room and the main percussion instruments. Like you said when they're not being used for class or ensemble rehearsals, so.
Like every practice from as a piano. Uh, there are specific rooms for double bass, double reeds.
Percussion, drum set, harp, etc that only those students have access to and percussion is definitely one of those in terms of the major, minor, or especially you're asking about the three 2 program.
So music major can't get a music minor for example, so you can take.
Evan Raymond
04:39:55 PM
More information on music theory classes?
A jazz elective, jazz history or ranging, or participate in the big band or jazz improv. You can turn a jazz minor as a music major, but you can still participate and take those classes as your music electives.
And it it actually looks like a missed one earlier. I'm sorry um share and has had asked, UM.
Joshua Grothem
04:40:43 PM
Is the $75 cost for a semester for lessons the same price for a non-music major or minor student?
What the process might be to switch into the music program after someone rolls, so for someone who who didn't go through the process now for whatever reason, should they decide to come to Redlands and they're here this fall, what might that process look like? and I know that might it will probably be different depending on whether they want to minor in music or do the VM, but what that process might look like for someone who maybe decides a little bit later on that they want to do something in the music program?
Alright, I'll take this one again so.
Two different things. One is if you want to participate in the ensembles, you just show up as soon as you arrive on campus in the fall and sign up for an ensemble slot. Some of those are going on line and will send that information out for the signups, not the auditions.
But that's for everybody. If you want to be a minor or major, you do have to apply to the school music and take an audition.
Ryan Wilson
04:41:42 PM
About lessons, would classical/orchestral percussion lessons be separate from drum set lessons, would those count as two separate sets of lessons?
Whether it's before school starts or once you arrive on campus, so we still need to go through that. And if you are choosing Redlands and you want to take care of that before September, the online application doesn't close. You can still submit a video and then application over the summer and you can come in knowing that otherwise we can do it during orientation, week or the first week of school.
Set date each semester for students to audition into the programmer to move up, for example, from The Bachelor of Arts to The Bachelor of music.
So once school starts, there's a specific date we can help you sign up for otherwise, right up until the first day of school we can take care of it online with a video audition.
Awesome, we have a student who wants to know a little bit more about music theory classes.
Yeah, so we have a level with the firm are music miners and non majors. We have MUS 116 and 117 musicianship skills one and two which is taught by Doctor, Doctor Catherine Hickey and sort of the fundamentals of music literacy and those classes and it's required of our music minors. But it's open to anybody for The Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of music programs students take.
3123 and 30. Four for the VM, as well as your training 123 and four for the VM, and it's a wonderful curriculum. Tony suitor is our head of a composition program. We have a new composition faculty member coming on board in the fall on Ray Myers, who is a wonderful composer. Anna, fantastic teacher. We're very excited about him. He does a lot of electronic stuff. Weird stuff.
And I are your training curriculum is really 2nd to none that is taught by our ensemble. Directores so all directory. Coral studies Nicole Andrews. Anna director local studies code win teach those classes and it's actually very unusual for ensemble directors to be teaching in the theory curriculum and we do that because we want to Round Table to be good and for you to have a really top notch experience. They've got that curriculum down Pat and it it really works so it's.
Great program, it really is and it's a real strength of what we do.
Oh, and along with that is our our piano classes. So are the music major. You take 3 semesters of class piano and they are In Sync with both our music theory and our your training classes. So if you're in your training one theory, one in class piano one, you're going to have the curriculum crossing so that everything is being being reinforced in those three classes.
Awesome, I'm it. Looks like another question about costs of a student wanting to know um. Basically, if there is a fee, is it the same?
Terrence Perrier
04:44:42 PM
Does that answer your question Evan?
Is the $75 cost for a semester the same price for a non? Is it basically a set price? Like if the cost is $75? If is it $75 for everyone who might have to pay that cost.
Well, there's two things.
I mean the the lesson fee. Some majors it's waved and I think for minors it's wave 2 right so?
Are minors and majors aren't required to take lessons?
Ryan Wilson
04:45:09 PM
For the 3-2 program, if I were to complete the music/prerequisite courses in 3 years for a music bachelors, would I come back after my first year at either WashU or Columbia for my classes graduation?
That are required for the degree, so minor is required to take one credit. 30 minutes of lessons every week.
Evan Raymond
04:45:21 PM
Yes that was perfect thank you
Terrence Perrier
04:45:29 PM
Great, glad to hear it!
Uh, and we don't charge for that. If you're a non major or if you take a secondary instrument, the fee would typically be $250 per unit. We only recommend one unit per instrument or per lesson.
And that's $250. But if you are in a large ensemble on that Instrument Choir Band Orchestra.
That fee is reduced to $75 for everybody for the first unit only. So if you choose to take it two or three credit lesson, you're going to pay the regular price for the second or third credit or unit and you get a reduction for the first one. If you're in an ensemble. So I hope that clarifies the question, but in it can be occasionally waived by the Director, Doctor Motyka. But on paper we're going to tell you that the fee is $250 per credit.
Reduced to $75 for the one credit.
And not on paper. I frequently wave that.
But even you know, compared to what you would pay for lessons in in the real world, it's a steal it. That is what they would. $75 is one lesson so.
It's a fantastic deal. You can't go wrong and there's, you know we're going to loan you instruments. You're going to take a have all these performance opportunities and.
We're going to provide accompanist at no additional cost. If you need to make a recording for grad school or summer program, we provide that service industry cost, so there's no extra fees. There's no hidden fees. There's no surprises once you figure out how to pay your tuition and housing cost, so that's a really special and unique opportunity.
And there's not even any.
And I want to echo again what what Brad said is that again, if you are getting a degree through the program, if you are a major or a minor. Again, these are things you have to do as part of your curriculum. You're not paying for them.
Just I've seen multiple people ask that question. Just want to make sure that it's clear that if it's part of your program.
Those fees aren't there. The fees are only there if you are not studying in the program and yours wanted to kind of do some things for fun or your own. Enrich met an then that's then when they would work with you. But again, if you are a major or a minor, it's part of your program. Those fees aren't there.
Yeah, the other thing that's available as well. If you say I have never played cello, but I've always wanted to.
That's not the right time to sign up for one on one lessons. Uh, I'm sorry to say, but what we do offer is lessons with our own students through our Community School program where you could take very affordable lessons.
One on one with a student and learn new measurement sofas, piano or drums said or cello. Then that's still something you can do. You're just not going to be able to get an elective credit for that.
But let's you know if you think about you want to play in an ensemble.
Learn to play on, you know. Continue to play your instrument. You're going to take lessons and ensembles at the reduced fee. That's two credits per semester. That fulfills a lot of your electric requirements over the four years.
We had another question about so Ryan wanted to know more about percussion so wanted to know would classical.
So what? Let's see what percussion lessons be separate from drum set lessons and would they count as two separate sets of lessons?
Yes, uh, they are separated. They they count as two separate sides. We have three percussion teachers. You rebuild slit and Joel Taylor and Joel Taylor is our drum set instructor. Urien bill or classical teachers. And so if you come in as a as a percussion major, do you do have to take drum set lessons and so we pay for that? 'cause it's part of the group?
And certainly not rupees, but they they are set but yes.
Should I add to that so if?
Yeah, if your performance major.
Percussion then you have to take one year of drum set lessons if you're a classical guitar student and you are performance major, you have to take a one year on jazz, guitar, violin, Viola, sending. So there are a lot of instruments. We wear. A doubling is required, other times if you're not performance, that's optional, and then we can discuss that.
Plan and make sure you're not overloading yourself with requirements.
Yeah, I think one of the things about, uh, that's great about red lenses.
Or your needs, and so it's frequent that I have a student came into my office and say Hey Doctor Media, I did my required Viola lesson on really having a great time with it. I love Keira, I want to continue. Can I do it? I can't say no to that so you know those kinds of individual.
After I cannot ******* approach those individually. So if you do have something that as your in your programming, you're really liking something and you know maybe getting acquired, you wanna take voice lessons will help you out with that.
And then it looks like one last question again a bit more about how music might work with three 2 wanting to know um how that program works. And so Ryan, I actually I can ask ask answer this question for you is that?
With the 3 two of We don't technically graduate you when you move on to the next program, and that's more so related to financial aid. And so that's true regardless of what you're combining. The engineering portion with would be it some combination with music or physics or whatnot, so technically you don't graduate until you're done with all of the program requirements, both from Redlands an from Colombia or Washoe. That's then when we kind of officially graduate from both programs.
Another that's more so related to financial aid.
To make sure that you're still an undergraduate student, 'cause if we graduated blue and then you went to the secondary school.
It would count as a second BA, which is not technically true, so that's just a bit more information and know that we will actually have Eric Hill who runs the three 2 program he's going to do a session a little bit later in April. So Ryan, it seems like from some of your questions you are really interested in maybe combining something with music in three 2 still free to send us an email would be happy to maybe talk with you offline about the mechanics, how that would all work together, because it does work very differently.
Then all the other programs that you would traditionally complete at Redlands.
Sayjal Waddy
04:52:25 PM
Any last questions?
And I think the big thing is, even though it is very special, it has been done. We were talking about the student had done earlier is my close friend David. So all it is different.
It's doable, you gonna get it done if you want to get it done.

Sounds like we're done with with questions. Uhm, I'll let you all. Um, if you have any last spot. Brandon Terrence for free to share them and then we will end of discussion in those students who have any additional questions, please reach out to our office. We are more than happy to talk with you one on one with my office in the office of admissions about financial aid and next steps.
Or we're happy to put you in practice. Students like Terrence or with faculty in the School of Music, so again, happy to continue these conversations off campus in a more one. On one setting we can get into more of an integrity, but we hope with this review an overview of the program and how it works and all the great opportunities that are available.
