Alright, so I think it looks like the majority of people who registered have signed in so local head out and get started.
First outlet Kelly and Brooke introduce themselves and then I'll make a quick statement about the fall and then will jump right into the presentation.
Alright, Good afternoon everybody here. I guess. Good evening. Depending where you are calling from. Uh, thanks for joining. As was mentioned my name is doctor Kelly Driesen. I am the executive director for the office of career and professional development here at the University of Redlands and excited to talk with you today.
Hi, I'm broke mcbey an I'm a rising senior and psychology major here at the University of Redlands.
Awesome, and so right before we get started I just want to make a blanket statement about the fall. I know we've received a lot of questions and emails about what's happening with the fall, so I just want to address that now that we can hopefully focus the rest of the web and R on really talking about Redlands Anne how we prepare and support our students. So right now know that our our hope are kind of plan a is to be able to resume in person classes and to allow students to move in in the fall.

That's our plan a in our hope, but we understand that things are very fluid right now and we could be in any combination of situations this fall and so we do have a cobet 19 task force and we have a number of committees on campus who are exploring a number of different scenarios and so right now they're working on fleshing out all those different plans so they're creating a plan ABCD. Kind of all the way down the alphabet so that we can be prepared for whatever comes.
Ariella Fisher

Once they fleshed out all the different possibilities, know that we will be sending information out so students and families stay tuned. We will once all the different options again, or fleshed out, and we have a little bit more details. We will see more information about what some of the other possible scenarios might be for the fall, depending on where we are, but again, no our goal. Our hope is to be able to have in person classes, but we of course are creating a number of contingency plans that are made up of a whole lot of different options that we can use.
And once we have more information, we will send that out.
So hopefully that gives you some information and with that I'm actually going to turn it over to Kelly Dries. Who's going to walk us through this information and then know that when she's done with the presentation will be happy to take questions from you all?

Hi, I’m from Highland, CA
Wonderful thank you, um, and we're excited today to share some resources, some events and things that we offer students, but I wanted to start with a little bit about our office and hopefully will you see in front of you is actually a virtual version of our culture wall at the University of Redlands OC PD and I'm going to talk through a little bit of this. Hopefully in the fall you'll be able to see this live an in person in our office space.
But to give some context, I was hired about 1 1/2 years ago at the University of Redlands with the goal of rethinking career education on campus. In the last year we have transformed the U of our Career Center and are transforming campus really into a place where we aren't the only people on campus. Talking about career. One of the things I realized when I came to campus was like many higher education campuses. Career centers have a branding problem. We weren't sharing the Y.

Of what we do, we were sharing the Watt that we offer resume reviews and we offer cover letter reviews and we do all that, but that's very transactional in the work that we do and can do with students is quite transformation TLE. So we started with rebranding who we word. We changed our name to the office of career in professional development and we worked with a company called gaping void to create what you see. Here is an electronic version of our culture wall and our culture wall really is a live version of our beliefs and values. I won't.

I can hear her fine
Take you through every single one of these 'cause we'd be here forever if I told you a story about all of these pieces but I do want to take you through a few that I feel are particularly important for your first year on campus so the first one there on the left right corner if you can't see it what it actually says is there is no right major we believe there is no correct major and that whatever you major in at the U of are you will be successful based on what you do outside of the classroom with those experiences that you're learning in the classroom.
That second one along the top row says find your piece. We believe this is also incredibly important. Whether you join as soon organization you get involved with a sport. Whatever you do, finding community is going to be really important when you're here. And it's also going to create life long connections for you that are going to help you when you leave the institution in four years.
Sayjal Waddy
04:09:01 PM
Or try refreshing your screen
That Next One along that top row says we believe nothing happens without experiment and that trying things out is a great way to figure out what you do like. But almost equally important is figuring out what you don't like.
I was in English major who wanted to be a journalist and soon as I did my first internship with the newspaper, I realized really quickly that I didn't want to do that, but it took getting that experience to figure out that what I thought it was wasn't quite what I needed for an opportunity and for my life.
Sayjal Waddy
04:09:34 PM
Also know we're recording webinars and we'll have this uploaded on the website
So finding things that you can get involved with, doing an internship, volunteering, taking a course that interests you just because it interests you. You never know what doors can open up for your future by doing that, especially critical in the first year.
Moriah Conedy
04:09:40 PM
I can hear her now. I just reloaded my page.
Romanne Pelous
04:09:42 PM
Im on google chrome
That Next One along the top says who do you know here? We believe that building your network is critical while you're at the University of Redlands and as a student, you are tapping into a huge alumni network database that wants to support you. And we've seen that come out in in waves over the last couple of weeks, with alumni actually reaching out and helping us call seniors to check in on them and help them with their job search. So the kind of network of support that you'll have here. But it takes some intention aliti to build that and we can help you do that while you're here at the U of R.
I'm going to share two more. One is the the yellow bright yellow one. That's kind of the 2nd row right in the middle.
Case you can't see it, there's a small green slice that says the college years in the blue slice for your career years and you can see on that pie chart that your careers really take up a lot of your life and we think it's important for you to be thinking about your career and your future as soon as you step on campus and.
I think I would say I commend you 'cause you're here now, which means you're probably going to be the students that are coming into our office, so that's wonderful. That definitely don't think it's never too soon to stop in and have a conversation with us.
The last one I'll share is one of my particular favourites, and I think it's quite timely right now. It's the little guy that's got his hands up in the air and it says eliminate the fear of not having an answer. Many times they hear from students, especially 1st and 2nd year students that.
They feel like they can't come in and talk to somebody in our office because they don't know what they want to do or they don't know what to ask.
You don't need to know anything to come into our office. You can come in and chat with us regardless of where you are, and we can help you get started. We can help provide guidance, share some questions to get you thinking.
Help you really take charge of how you want to build that experience. While you're here on campus, which will translate into what happens when you leave campus.
As a student at the U of R, you have access to a ton of online resources that are available to you 24/7. This is especially critical right now when so many students across the country are having to tap into resources on-line. I've provided a screenshot here that's got a lot of those resources for you and kind of going to quickly highlight those. So the first one on the left hand corner focus too is an important one, especially as your first joining the institution, and this is actually a pre enrollment requirements, so it is something that.
You will take before you step foot on campus in the fall and we will follow that through with you for your whole student life cycle. While you're a student at the U of R. So you'll hear from us in that first year about coming in to talk about your results so we can explore what you're thinking in terms of major your interests, your values, your talents, and how they might align into what you hope to do in the future.
What can I do with this major is also a great resource to think about the variety of pathways that exist within every major, and this is one of my favourites 'cause every time I show it to a student you see their eyes light up of how many things that haven't even thought about when they're thinking about their major interests. How many career pathways actually exist within those majors?
Handshake is another resource we have. It's kind of our main hub. It's where we post resources for students handouts on resume tips, interview strategies. Also home to our job and internship portal where employers who are actually seeking University of Redlands students and alumni can post jobs. It's also where we post all of our events. One of the great features about handshake, it allows you to learn from other students at other institutions who might have had an internship or a job.
At a certain company so you can learn about their experience and see if it's one that you want to explore.
Shifting to that 2nd row, career shift and going global or both job and internship boards, curve shift is a national and some international job and internship opportunity. It also has a robust company search database that you can utilize going global specifically for international internships and jobs. Also has state and country databases so a plethora of resources available in both of those.
We also have a license with stand out which is a mock interview platform so students can practice interviews virtually and submit them into the OC PD and we can share feedback. Or if you do the mock interview like I've done before virtually and you don't like it and you don't want anyone to see it, you can delete it as well, but it's a great opportunity for you to practice those mock interviews.
Jeannine Forslund
04:14:42 PM
Are these resources that Redlands has site licenses for (and only for students) or can they be accessed by anyone?
And then the last resource there. That's a virtual resource you'll have access to as alumni fire, which is an alumni networking database. Right now. There's about 900 folks in our alumni fire database. An all of those 900 folks have signed up to do something for someone else in the network. So even when you sign up as a student, which I encourage you to do in your first year, you'll be asked how are you willing to give back to the network so that students can support one another? And alumni can support students and lemon. I can support alumni, and it's been great.
A lot of connections have come out of that and we hope you will get on that as soon as you get started here in the fall.
Outside of our online resources, students can also stop in for support in our career studio, which is located in the library. It's actually where I'm working from right now so that I had better Internet connection than I do it my home. We are available Monday through Friday. We have varying hours by semester, but they're always available online. To check an, you'll get plenty of emails from us so you'll know when those hours are available. Right now we're running our Studio 100% virtually, given the current circumstances.
In the fall, uhm, we are planning to have a fully open karere studio, but we will continue to provide virtual options, which we've always done for students who might be on one of our branch campuses or might be studying away. We always have virtual sessions available for students to access. We have a team of peer career educators who are undergraduate upperclassmen as well as graduate students and professional staff who are all available in the studio to help you when you when you drop in and you don't need to make an appointment. So it's very easy to just.
Brooke McBay
04:16:16 PM
Hi Jeannine! Yes, all of these resources have site licenses for just Redlands students and alumni.
Stop in and visit with us and we found that that can eliminate some of the fear students have. Is no appointment required, no steps needed.
And we have employers who will do studio takeovers and actually come in and take over the career studio for the day. This past spring we had every Amazon and some of our school districts actually participate in that. So you'll have a chance not only to get your resume reviewed, but maybe with an employer.
And one thing I would say and throw out to all of you as if you'd like to make a one on one session before you get here that is available to you. Are virtual sessions do require you to make an appointment just because of the system that we're utilizing, but you do have access to that. If you'd like to check it out, you can view that on our website and click on it to make a session with one of our staff.
One thing that I like to highlight is that alumni actually have access to all of the resources that I've mentioned so far and will continue to mention from graduation to retirement and that's not the norm on many campuses so know that your career is not a linear thing and 10 years from now. You might be thinking about a promotion or jumping to another industry and we're here as a resource for you throughout your whole career in your whole life.
Jeannine Forslund
04:17:50 PM
Thanks!
The other thing that I will mention on this slide as we do send email so one of the ways we get in touch with students is through our email notifications and our emails right now are sent on Mondays and Thursdays. So we have a newsletter that goes out on Monday with some upcoming events, an resources, some strategies as far as you know, the job and internship search and then on Thursdays we have a specific newsletter called Hireable dog that goes out to all students with specific opportunities that employers.
Have reached out to us to hire University of Redlands students and alumni.
In addition to some of those opportunities, we also have several signature events that we host. Like most campuses, we do have a biannual karere career and internship expose where we have recruiters coming on campus to hire our students and alumni and we also have an annual career conference where we bring in alumni an employers to speak on a variety of topics. We have multiple tracks that students can follow. They get to have lunch with alumni and it's a really great day. That's probably one of my favorite events.
We host to just bring together a lot of groups of people in our. Students have had some really great interactions at the current conference.
And then we also have local, an out-of-state career tracks are local, career tracks are typically to places in Southern California, where we can drive for the day and visit with a few different organizations. Are last out-of-state career track, which we will host this spring break is when we like to host our out of state career track. We were in Seattle over spring break.
Brooke McBay
04:19:29 PM
No problem!
And we were able to visit alumni at Microsoft at Amazon at Oracle right here in this photo is a picture of the group of students who were able to participate within a lum. He's an English lum, Patrick Thomas and he is currently very busy at Microsoft, 'cause he's one of the lead leaders on the team. The Microsoft Teams, which I know I see, keep seeing commercials about, but they're very, very busy, and he is leading that group, but a lot of.
A lot of great opportunities to connect with companies but also connect with alumni on those career tracks. We also feature a variety of webinars with professionals in the field on a whole host of topics.
I was particularly proud of a webinar series we did last year called your identity at work, where we feature different alumni, panelist, speaking to a specific identity that they hold that has impacted their job search and their job choices. I thought that was probably one of my favorite online virtual programs that we've offered.
And then we also have a corporate partnership to our annual suit up event, which we will host in the fall or the spring where students can tag along and come get some discounted professional dress to utilize in internships and jobs in their future.
One of the other programs that I think is quite unique at the University of Redlands is called our career faculty Fellows program. This actually just received national recognition in the Ward, which we were very, very proud of, and it was good news to come in the midst of all the chaos that's happening in the world right now. The faculty fellows are student nominated. Anna Review Committee of faculty, staff, and students. Select the winners of this group. It's going into its second year an we've partnered with our College of Arts.
In science, is Deans Office to?
Benefit these faculty fellows in an pay them and that they help us increase karere engagement. An resources to students in the classroom so they're actually building career competency. Zan career conversations intentionally into their curriculum there advising and their teaming up with other departments on campus to do the same. An I mentioned this specifically here because this is not something that you're going to find it. Many institutions Ann is a great experience at the U of R.
To work with faculty who are above and beyond committed to your holistic self as a student, not only while you're here, but really for the rest of your life.
And we're noticing out, especially right now is we're tapping into our fellows, and we have a broader group called the career alliance on our campus of dedicated faculty, staff, and administrators who are committed to students careers. And they're helping us school students to check in and see how they're doing and how we can help. and I think that speaks to the level of commitment of faculty having career conversations on campus. So you're not just going to hear this and get get information from the Career Center, you'll be hearing it from your faculty as well.
One of the things I often get when I share all of that is like, OK, well, that's cool. You know you have good programs. You have great faculty, you have a ton of resources, but what does that mean for me? Or what does that mean for my student? And here are some highlights that I wanted to share. Actually, from a recent study that we participated in called the national alumni career mobility survey, which was in a national survey. Alot of institutions participated throughout the country in the survey.
A minute surveyed alumni at five and 10 years out.
A man we just got the data back. Actually not that long ago. About a month ago and we found out that nearly 11% of alumni on their own company, which is higher than the national and peer comparisons in this study, and I think.
Demonstrates very much the entrepreneurial spirit that we see among students. Many times students come into our studio and they've started their own companies. They've launched their own side, hustles, and you know a lot of times it's wait that's not on your resume. We need to make sure that's on your resume, but definitely a lot of alumni take that when they leave and create their own their own companies.
Another interesting data point is that employees doubled their initial salary only five years after graduation, which was also higher. All of these that are on here is higher than the national and peer comparisons. Alumni rate their career satisfaction 20% above the national average, which is outstanding and speaks to the level of preparedness they receive here at Redlands.
And nine out of 10 alumni report that they received great career advice from folks on campus, which is also really, really helpful when you think about the nuances of figuring out your career when you leave campus.
Well, that data tells a little bit of the story. I also wanted to give you all a chance to hear from one of our current students broke Mcbay to share her experience working with the OC PD as well as highlight some ways that students can really make the most of the resources available to them. So I'm going to turn it over to Brooke.
Hi everyone up thank you again for joining us uhm I think with my experience with the office of Korean professional development it's kind of unique in the fact that I've had the pleasure of working for the office as well as being a student but I think that in being a student at the University of Redlands I remember coming into college and I was thinking as a freshman I know what I want to do but I don't really know how to get there and I think a lot of their lives a lot of ambiguity as a freshman as an incoming student about like what are the steps that I need to take now.

To reach my goals in the future and I think when I was when I was a student I look at the OC PD as an unlimited resource a place where I felt comfortable to come to these knowledgeable professionals and have someone that's willing to offer me one on one support to give me feedback on things like mock interviews and some of the things that Kelly had mentioned before and I think with the opposite gram threshold development there's a lot of resources and events that are really cool that Kelly also talked about with things like the career track that career conference the critics though.

Hi
Sachi Pawooskar-Almeida
04:26:15 PM
We cannot hear anything
But I think the opposite group in professional development essentially helps bridge the gap from college years to careers so while you still may be figuring out your major the office of crim fresh development has various platforms that help me look at all my options and focus 2 was one of the biggest ones so like I knew I wanted to be a psych major and seeing that this platform allowed me to see different things that I could do in my major different occupations in different routes that people took with the same major.

Sorry if you can't hear Brooke, refreshing the browser always helps

04:26:50 PM
I'm using Chrome and I couldn't either until I refreshed
Also Kelly briefly mention our studio which was one of the one of the most crucial aspects I think of our office in the fact that we offer service where you can come in and just drop in and I think being so busy in school I just decided to just drop in one day and I worked with up your career educator on one of my professional documents like my resume and things like that and just something like something as crucial is that to have that input and have that insight that's just been invaluable for me Anas.

Also turn off and on your wifi on your computer/phone. That worked for me
Has really landed me multiple scholarships and internship opportunities through that so I really have a lot to be appreciative and also I would like to plug our social media I know much of you may be active on social media but I'll add the UM the handle in the chat box below but that is honestly one of the best resources resources we offer with staying up to date with what's going on in our office so you can see kind of our staff you can see all the cool events that we're doing a lot of cool?
Paula Nieto
04:27:28 PM
On average how many students graduate with a job or internship in hand?
Refreshing insights in motivation that we put on their daily and it's never too soon to get involved with our office basically we're here for you throughout every time that you're here and stop by the library when things go back to normal and um stop in and say hi to everyone.

Questions!
Alright, well I think we went through that much quicker than we thought, but that's good because I'd actually really rather spend the time in QA so that you can get your questions answered. and I know some of you. It seems like I've had some trouble with sound and hearing us. I know it was shared that it will be recorded, but also, um, if there's questions of something you have, we can absolutely re share something and bring another slide back up as well.
Alright Kelly, we do have one question. Uhm, and I know this is one that you get a lot, but if you could just talk about typically.
Lucas Abreu Loureiro
04:28:50 PM
Yes that's what I was going to ask! ^^
Average or just information about how many students graduate with jobs or internships. I know this very much varies depending on the major. That's something to be aware of students since we do have such a great variety of majors in Redlands, what someone is doing with a music degree is going to be different than maybe what someone is doing business versus someone who's pre health or pre Med. But Yes, Kelly if you could just talk about.
Sam Abere
04:28:51 PM
do you also help students pick a major? what tools do you provide?
Some of the information that you have about that.
Yeah, absolutely the question. We get a lot.
Megan Morkus
04:29:01 PM
How can students learn about and conduct research at Redlands?
Sachi Pawooskar-Almeida
04:29:03 PM
How do you measure your rates - based on internships
Um and I will say, uh, the sorry. I'm getting feedback, but it's gone now, uhm?
Paula Nieto
04:29:10 PM
On average how many students graduate with a job or internship in hand?
Romanne Pelous
04:29:16 PM
So, we're already committed to Redlands but are just concerned about the start of Freshman year this year.
I can speak to, I guess right now 'cause I I do think it varies. I think it varies by major. I would say it also varies by how much the student has been proactive in their search before they graduate. We do have some students who decide they don't want to really proactively search and they want to take the summer because our graduation is so early they want to take that early part of this summer to spend time thinking about opportunities. So some of that changes the data to throw out a hard statistic of how many.
All seniors a Mazon office, with the help of some alumni to check in on them to see how they're doing, but also to gather some of that data. And we ended up speaking with about half of the students. And of that half about half had opportunities lined up weather jobs or Graduate School plans with, you know, kind of accepted enrolled normally I would say that divide us about half plan to go to Graduate School in about half. Plan to work.

Hi Romanne, our goal is to start with in person classes this fall, but we're working on other options so we can be prepared for any given situation. Once the contingency plans are together we'll send this out to students and families
Sachi Pawooskar-Almeida
04:30:15 PM
or on jobs or on students going into post grad programs
So we don't have 100% knowledge because we don't hear from all of the students, but I would say for the students who are active and wanting a job by the time they walk across that stage at Commencement. It happens and we're here for that.
Diego Samaro
04:30:30 PM
Yes, I am committed too.
Awesome, I have to remember. I mute myself awesome so few students had questions about how we help students choose a major. And so, Kelly, I know a lot of the information from focus 2 is really helpful. But if you want to talk about that and then I can also follow up and just talk about what that process looks like at the University of Redlands as well.
Romanne Pelous
04:30:59 PM
We're committed to Redlands but our main concern is that Freshman year doesn't start online. We firmly believe this first year should be "live". Is a GAP year a possibility?
Sachi Pawooskar-Almeida
04:31:12 PM
Do students tend to stay in Redlands - or which Uni do students most students go to for their PG
Gemma Lang
04:31:20 PM
Will Redlands be offering a webinar on the different Covid 19 plans the university is making or a forum to answer questions? Sorry I know that's off topic.
Yeah, sounds good. So two of the resources and I brought her online resources back up here focus 2 and what can I do with this major? Are both really great resources to help students think about major an also major to karere? Uhm I did share at the beginning that there is no right major and I are office stands firmly by that. Whether you major in philosophy or business or theater.
Or political science. Your outcomes can be what you want them to be. Uhm, I am an English major who started her career as an English teacher, quickly realized that was a terrible choice and I should not have listened to my parents though parents. I'm sure you give good advice. My parents just wanted me to teach like they did.
Sayjal Waddy
04:32:10 PM
Once we have more information about the other possible plans for the fall we'll send more information.
I decided to go into research in health care and I never would have thought that as an English major, that was something that I could do, but it was the skills that I gained as an English major that allowed me to translate that into a career opportunity. And we talked to students all the time about the skills there gaining not only in their major, but also in those extra things. They do. The internships they take on the extracurricular and leadership opportunities they get involved with. So definitely knowing that there is no right major.

04:32:29 PM

04:32:51 PM
For information about gap years and defers connect with your admissions counselor who can provide you with more information about the process
Um focus too. And what can I do with this? Major are great resources to help students really think about what they are most interested in and how that might align with an opportunity when they leave. Focus 2 is a pre enrollment requirements, so you will be required to take that before you even step foot on campus in the fall and in the fall you'll be hearing from us to come in and have a conversation about your focus to results. I think focus too is a great opportunity to have a conversation if you take the assessment and you don't do anything with it. It's not like a Magic 8 ball. It's not going to spit out your specific career choices.
Although it can be pretty accurate at giving you some industries to think about based on your interests based on your values based on your talents.
Natalie Navarro
04:33:21 PM
Are internship opportunities only for after we graduate? Or can we do an internship while in school?
Romanne Pelous
04:33:22 PM
Thank you!
Is a great robust resource that can provide you some insight to have a conversation and start to think about options and then what can I do with this major? I love that resource because it not only aligns. Here's a major philosophy here. The common pathways that people across the country as philosophy majors have gone into here are the companies that hire within those industries and then here are strategies that you can do. If this is something you're interested in. So the sooner you look at that, the more you can try some of those strategies out to feel.
Get a feel for it. That's a major you actually want to pursue. Or if you want to try something else, omm.
An you know I shouldn't tell you how many times I changed my major, but I changed my major several times because I wasn't sure. So one of the things that I think we do at Redlands is is give you time to explore and figure that out before you're forced to declare a major. And we're here to have those conversations. As you're thinking about what works best for you.
Also, I just want to let students know that unless you're part of a music or the Johnson program, you have time to come and explore so soon as it's cool music audition and they kind of come in as music students. Students were part of Johnson will come in as Johnson students. Otherwise, for everyone else you are not assigned to any given major and so you have time to use all of these tools that we have to talk with your advisor to go to open house is. There's a lot of things that we do throughout orientation, especially that first year.
To help students understand what we have to offer and so know that you have until the end of your second year, two decide upon your major and also it is really common for students to double major or do a major to minor so you're not limited to just one thing or another. Most of our students actually actually at the University of Redlands have multiple major, so that's really common.
And that's really common here on campus, so yeah.
Is there anything you want to add broke from the student experience or should I?
Move on to another question.
Awesome Ann Kelly. Can you talk a little bit? Actually more about the program that you initiated with faculty. We had the students ask about the process of getting internships, research opportunities and Whatnot both after Redlands. Also during Redlands. and I know the source for many internships for some is do your office and for a lot of students actually through their Department as well, who's very aware of all the different opportunities. So if you could talk more about kind of faculty involvement.
Megan Morkus
04:36:08 PM
Is research a central part in STEM majors at Redlands?
Morgan Irwin
04:36:09 PM
Thank you for your time.
And I love that question Natalie about internship opportunities. They are definitely available while you are in school. A man I would recommend doing them about 80% of employers actually won't hire A candidate if they don't have internship experience. So definitely to set yourself up for success is do an internship and there's a lot of opportunities to find those I mentioned and I'm going to keep this resources. Slide up 'cause handshake corrosive Dan going global all have internship options and.
Sayjal Waddy
04:36:23 PM
Megan, yes
Our office can help you search through prepare your application, do your resume, your cover letter or prep for interviewing. Negotiating your salary all important things in the internship search that we can help with.
And as was mentioned, you also have access to faculty who have some great connection. So if you're interested in an internship, letting your faculty advisor know right away that you are so you can talk through some options and they often have a plethora of connections of folks that they will help you connect with so that you can find an internship that you're really interested in, and often times the great thing is that will land you many times with an alumni.
The cool thing about alumni fire, which I mentioned is one of our tools is there are options there when illuminated signs up to say if they're looking for an intern and we've had some students find internship opportunities through alumni fire as well.
Sayjal Waddy
04:37:20 PM
We have opportunities in the school year and paid summer internships on campus and off campus.
Soraya Real
04:37:29 PM
Is the Focus2 prerequisite apart of the new-student checklist or given to us on a different checklist (or something similar)?
And you can also do an internship for credit. So if you want to do an internship in May term, you can do an internship on this summer. You can do an internship during this semester. It's really up to you and the great thing right now is employers are offering virtual internships in. I've been a part of several employer and recruiter trend panels and employers are sharing that. They actually might consider continuing virtual internships because it exposes their ability to recruit candidates who might not be able to come for the fall semester.
Sayjal Waddy
04:37:52 PM
Focus2 is something you'll do as part of the new-student checklist
From out of state, but they could have intern and help work on projects virtually so definitely as much as there's been a lot of negative from this pandemic. I think there's some positive as well.
Also, Kelly, um, there's two centers on campus at all. Also offer internships as well, which is our pride center and our Title IX center offer internships to students and that can be used as credit as well. Or I'm pretty sure that some of them you can do as a work study position as well.
Natalie Navarro
04:38:57 PM
thank you!
Kelly, could you talk a bit about, um, preparation for graduate programs? We know that for certain majors, like accounting or business, was getting their teaching credential a lot of the next steps is working, but for other majors, the next step for their particular program is typically some sort of Graduate School. So if you could talk a little bit about that process, that would be great.
Soraya Real
04:38:58 PM
Thank you!
Melia Maling
04:39:01 PM
Brooke, what kind of internships are those that those centers offer?
Yeah, absolutely, uhm. Something that we help with, UM, in a variety of ways. So a lot of students come into our career studio for help with Graduate School applications. We can help you with. Where do I search to look at graduate schools? If here are some of the things that I'm interested in and maybe different states that I want to pursue Graduate School in, or different requirements I have around funding or needing a graduate assistantship. And all of the components that are involved, we help with putting together your resume or CV.
For that application also help with thinking through who are good folks have to.
Ask for recommendations that you have a good variety of recommendations to ask folks for. How do you ask for a recommendation? We can help you with your personal statements, so really, anything in terms of the Graduate School search were here as a resource to help, and we often will have some different webinars and or in studio topic sessions on these topics, particularly in the fall semester, as students are prepping for Graduate School applications that will be due in the early spring.
And broke it. Looks like there was a question for you if you could just have a little bit more about some of the internships that the centers that you mentioned offer.
Hey OK yeah, um so some of the issues that they offer so to the ones that really comes to mind for me are The Pride Center and the Title IX office that do internships is really dependent on what you prefer to do I know what the price center they often work on initiatives in the office that they've been looking to do, they hold certain events every year or every semester so they work on doing that and a lot of it is.
Why did you say space allies? Did you things like that? And so it really is dependent on what the office needs at that at that particular moment and what really your um, your plan is during that time what you kind of want to learn and get better experience with, and with title 9, I think you work with Erica, right? You work one on one with her and she and you look at Title IX initiatives an you talk with her about that you learn more about the process behind that as well.
Awesome, there was another question about where does.
So wanting to know? Do students tend to stay in Redlands? Do they go everywhere? Yes.
Sachi Pawooskar-Almeida
04:41:34 PM
Are the internships typically paid or unpaid?
Melia Maling
04:41:41 PM
cool! thank you, Brooke!
It's a, It's a good question and y'all are going to hate my answer, but it varies. A lot of students do stay in California. In many I would say actually venture into Los Angeles being the nearest city because it provides a lot of opportunities and they tend to get this so Cal Vibe and want to.
Wanna stay a lot go back to potentially where.
Brooke McBay
04:42:15 PM
Hi Sachi! Did you mean nternships in general or internships with those departments on campus?
Brooke McBay
04:42:24 PM
No problem Melia!
Where they were from um many might go back home to be near family, so I think it depends on the student in where they want to be. But regardless of where they're looking for their next steps, we are here to help them. So no matter where they want that job, we have a lot of resources to help us search for that. And we've got alumni connections throughout the country. We actually just were able to connect a recent graduate with an alumni who is in Australia.
Because that student wanted to move to Australia and we have an alumni there who is going to be able to connect with her and help her out. So definitely wherever they go there's resources and support.
Awesome and so I have a question here from I believe your name is romaine or Romani. I'm so sorry if I got your name wrong, but I'm actually going to ask if you could kind of clarify the question that you submitted. What you submit it was wondering for first year students if we have like a metric way to see which students might need more support for study life. That's just want to make sure I understand your question. Are you wanting to know how we support students in their first year and how we kind of monitor student is?
Is that how I'm understanding your question?
Romanne Pelous
04:43:14 PM
For the freshmen, is there a metric mid-way to see which students might need more support for study/life balance?
Romanne Pelous
04:43:25 PM
Thank you! its Romanne...feminine of Romeo...
Romanne Pelous
04:43:38 PM
YEs...the freshman year can be hard...yes
Romanne Pelous
04:43:55 PM
yes
Romanne Pelous
04:44:19 PM
yes! thank you!
Thank you so is is that was that the UM, did I get your question right? Sorry with the typing, sometimes it's hard to understand sometimes, but what I'm thinking you're wanting to know is how we support first year students. Awesome, right? OK, perfect. So yeah. So I can speak to that. 'cause That's so yeah, so we have a whole process connected to that. And actually on Wednesday we will have a residential life having a web and R and so if you're wanting to know more information about.
Um first year process retention. How we support students. I'll talk a little bit about it now, but I would definitely encourage you to tone in on Wednesday when we will have student life who is doing a webinar so will have the director of housing and will have some of our associate Deans. Student life were on an so they'll be able to talk with a lot more detail in terms of how we support students and some of the nitty gritty. But the answer is yes, we have some things in place during.
Orientation so students have orientation mentors. They also have peer mentors that are connected to their first year seminar class. The first year seminar class itself is one way in which we're able to support and help students with that transition and were able to kind of make sure students don't fall through the cracks. They also have a number of other teams.
That they've created through residential life in housing to be able to support and connects.
Make sure again that students don't fall through the cracks and make sure that we are connecting students to the different resources that are on campus, be it through the Health Center, be it through counseling, academic support, Disability Services.
Yes, always we have see Azores.
Romanne Pelous
04:45:28 PM
Do the RA's also engage with them?
Garrett Mitchell
04:45:40 PM
When is the panel on Wednesday?
Process again, I would encourage you to tune in on Wednesday when we will have housing and will have student life. Who was here because they do plan on talking a bit about that process and they'll be able to give you a lot more information as to how we support and help students. But yes, we have a great retention rate, typically around 90% of our students.
Romanne Pelous
04:45:43 PM
sorry for typos
Retain and a lot of that is because of the work that student life does during orientation during the first semester throughout the first year and the 2nd year as well. We also have some sophomore success plans as well, so will support isn't just for first year students. We also have different mechanisms in place for sophomore year, junior year and especially our seniors as well.
Sachi Pawooskar-Almeida
04:46:12 PM
Hi Brooke! Both, on and off campus, paid and unpaid
Sachi Pawooskar-Almeida
04:46:13 PM
Do you allow internships towards independent study?
Romanne Pelous
04:46:15 PM
Awesome!
Romanne Pelous
04:46:17 PM
And could remind me abot the class sizes?
Then I'll add in there. I actually taught a first year seminar this last year and their assessments we do with the first year students in the seminar to help them to help us gauge how the student is doing and be able to appropriately connect to resources where needed. So definitely something in those students.
Sayjal Waddy
04:46:29 PM
average class size is between 12-20
Sayjal Waddy
04:46:41 PM
student faculty ratio is 13:1
I mean, they're hearing from me once a month right now of how can I help continue to support you because they just went through a huge transition of ending their first year with a lot of change and so know that the first year advisor is a big big support and something that they have access to.
Sayjal Waddy
04:47:04 PM
On Wednesday the webinar is at 4pm and we'll have the Director of Residential Life on the webinar
And I would say from the Career Center in terms of students, maybe not being sure of what they want to study, what they want to do. We do specific outreach at the beginning of the sophomore year to any student who has not yet declared a major to have them come in and chat with us about what they're thinking about, so that we can help them think through what options they might consider. So definitely continuing to support them throughout their journey here.
Romanne Pelous
04:47:11 PM
Thank you!
Brooke McBay
04:47:13 PM
Sachi, it often depends on the internship as they vary. The ones I mentioned on campus are offered through work-study or can be done for school credit.
Garrett Mitchell
04:47:39 PM
Perfect! Thank You!
Awesome let me see does anyone have any other questions that are specifically for Kelly in the work that her office does we're getting a lot of general questions and so I'll definitely want to make sure I dress those but I want to make sure that first we use our time to ask any question specifically for Kelly and if you asked a question earlier and I didn't get to it feel free to resubmit it.
Because there were a lot of questions being thrown out there, so I tried to scan through and tried rest everyone's question. But again, if you did ask the question earlier in the Q&A session for Kelly or for Brooke Anne, I didn't get to it. Feel free to resubmit it just to make sure that we get to it, and so here's one now from Natalie.
Natalie Navarro
04:48:02 PM
So the center is to help like guide us to get to where we want to be career-wise?
And so she's wanting to know bullet down.
I guess just a little bit more about, uhm, the center and the support that you offer students.
Brooke, do you want to tackle that one?
Ethan Stambler
04:48:23 PM
What type of jobs can students get in Redlands while a student
Ethan Stambler
04:48:24 PM
Can you address tutoring for freshmen
Sayjal Waddy
04:48:46 PM
All students can get tutoring, we offer one-on-one and group tutoring
Emme Cardellini
04:48:52 PM
This was very helpful - thank you!!
Uhm, so basically what your question is so that when it is to help like guidance to get where we want to be clear wise. So essentially yes. So basically whether you come in not knowing much or knowing exactly what you want to do. Basically the OC PD is to help you with whatever point in your journey graph. So whether you need to figure out your maker whether you wanna figure out internship or any opportunity on campus or off campus on your ear, go CPS basic. The general premise. I think the goal of what we're trying to do is to get you.
Here's to your careers, and so it really depends on what you need. And so I think with the beauty of us, you know smaller board school is that we can that our office can offer you one on one support and work with you one on one to give you the support and information that you need individually, which is really cool.
Sayjal Waddy
04:49:15 PM
We also have a writing center
Natalie Navarro
04:49:29 PM
that's really cool, thank you!
Sachi Pawooskar-Almeida
04:49:31 PM
Thank you Brooke. Do you know if off-campus or paid internships are ever counted for credit?
Yeah, I would echo that wherever you are in the process, we're here, we're here to help and you don't need to know what you want to talk about when you come in. So even just the first semester come in and visit us and you can get some swag. All the images that we shared. We have a lot of stickers and buttons and everything that you can imagine with those images on that. Our students tend to love. So stop in and see us and get some swag and meet us.
Sayjal Waddy
04:50:00 PM
Hi Sachi, yes
And I know a question awhile back that we didn't answer asked about paid or unpaid internships. Uhm, and we have both. I will say we have both and you can find both, so it's going to be depending on what you're seeking and what you're looking for. There are some industries that still aren't paying interns are office works.
Um kind of outside of the work we do with students, we also work with employers and when we work with employers, we encourage them to pay students because you're not free labor and so we want. And I'm speaking my experience. Every internship I ever had was unpaid.
Sayjal Waddy
04:50:31 PM
off campus internships can be counted for credit, you would work out those details with your advisor
Sachi Pawooskar-Almeida
04:50:33 PM
Thank you
I don't think that should be the case anymore. I think we need. We need to change that so we advocate on behalf of students to get paid internships and to make sure that our employers are offering paid internships. Some of them might not be able to pay hourly, but we're finding a lot of them will offer a stipend or maybe offer some other benefits with as part of their organization. Maybe it's some professional development funding, but we advocate as much as we can with our employers to make sure that they're paying and really to not pay interns, you have to make some.
Legal requirements, uhm so.
Sayjal Waddy
04:50:55 PM
Other OCPD questions?
Romanne Pelous
04:51:00 PM
As a labor rep...your'e awesome!!!
Sometimes employers really, really should be paying and we're here. If you feel like you're in an unfair situation where you're doing labor an not learning.
And not being paid, let us let us know, especially if it's an internship you found in handshake 'cause we would follow up on that.
Kelly Dries
04:51:21 PM
Thank you Romanne!
A lot of what we talked to like with handshake all the positions on handshake or rented and we all look at them individually to make sure that they're trustworthy and reputable places so I know that.

Romanne Pelous
04:52:16 PM
You 3 rock! thank you!!!
Once we are, we cannot offer. You can check out the resource to look at internships. I know that's a common question on here. Like looking for internships on off campus or handshake is a great resource for you. I think from the other student you don't always have to go into the office and it's it's recommended that you do come in, but you can always just check and check out in your dorm, in your house wherever you need and you can check out anytime you want and it's really cool but handshake is that it Taylors based off your major in your experience cool different like internships in job opportunities.

I think for me, why was this when I was a student I knew what I wanted to do, but I wasn't sure like what major really suited what I wanted to do, and I think now is a senior. I look back in a lot of the classes that I was taking that I was really interested in, and then I found out I was accidentally minoring in like race and ethnic studies. So I think I, as you become a student here and like you, take classes, you'll figure out what really works for you and what you're interested in, which is kind of the media being an incoming student to kind of test the waters and see all the full classes we have to offer. But with the OC PD when I would come in, I would talk to.
Moriah Conedy
04:57:33 PM
Thank you!
Moriah Conedy
04:57:34 PM
How do you help double majors finish in four years as well?
Like people that were in my major, I would talk to people that could give me insight on what I wanted to do, and looking at those resources to see. OK, well it says this and this and this is the best way or the best methodology or this suggested and so I can kind of look at like what my plan of action was and see what worked best for me. It would work best for me, was to declare the psychology major which.
And probably to be like a senior and like having all this opportunity that better suit me for my field of interest.
And know that this is true weather. Again, it's one major or multiple multiple majors. Our goal is to help students graduate in four years and again. Most of our students do I included the link for Redlands promise which talks about our four year promise that we have here at the University of Redlands. Also other things that help with that small classes not having impacted majors, having a really flexible general education plan, which we call our liberal arts inquiry classes which are really interdisciplinary.
Good advising. Early outreach from OC PD. All of these things together I think, are why are some graduate in four years and why they are so successful.
Sachi Pawooskar-Almeida
04:58:37 PM
Thank you!
I would say just one thing or another. It's a combination of things, a lot of which comes out of this office right here. But also things that the Deans office dozen residential life does to support student again throughout the four years. So it's not just freshman year and just senior year when they were coming and leaving, but really throughout the four years to make sure they're getting sound advising that they're beginning to explore the things that interest them, that we're supporting them in. Getting internships and research and field work experience based learning is a really big part of the Redlands Education.
Helping students study abroad who want to study abroad. All of these things together really support our students and again help them out. Only finish, but make sure that they are prepared for a variety of opportunities after they graduate as well.
Sayjal Waddy
04:59:55 PM
Study Abroad! (once it's possible)
Did the University of Redlands and if you have the opportunity as a student, I 1000% recommended it was one of the coolest experiences and one of the most impactful experiences that ever had at the University of Redlands changed my life. I said it abroad to the Redlands Salzburg program and I sent abroad in Barcelona as well and one of the things to the OC PD was awesome for was that I didn't really know how to market that to employers into people in. So when I came in and worked one on one with the PCE they help me put that on my resume and they help me market that in a way that would be beneficial for me.
In my in my career interest.

We will have the director of housing on and so if you have questions about student life, that would be a great session for you to attend. Also, Kelly and Brooke have shared contact information they've also shared.
Information about social media. Feel free to join on there For more information and updates, especially.

Thank you! Have a nice day!
Again, what I just include it now is the link to our virtual events page, where we will have more webinars and also once this is done we will put the video and information up on that same virtual events website and so that's a great page to check just in general because all the different webinars we've done, we've recorded most of them an we have uploaded the audio and the videos on to that website, and so you're welcome to check that in a few days if you want to kind of re watch it at your own pace and get some more information.
